Crossing the EAC

The East Australian Current (EAC) is a warm current of water that extends down the east coast of Australia and is the preferred migration route of whales and a feeding ground for dolphins. During our transit to Brisbane, we crossed the EAC any boy did we luck out: we saw two pods of whales and three dolphin pods.

Honey, I shrunk the cups

The hallmark of any physics experiment is that they never work if put into practice. In geophysics our experiments actually work.

Check out the tweet for a video of the shrinkage. Everyone onboard decorated their own cups. Here is mine:

Last sunset on the ship

Today’s was truly the most spectacular sunset of our trip. Nature really turned it on for our final day at sea.

This was a fine sunset to reminice on the voyage. It has been a truly remarkable experience on the RV Investigator. For some it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. While everyone is looking forward to returning to shore, I’m sure the friendships forged during the early morning and late night dredges will stick like a manganese crust to a volcanic breccia.
